Restorative Joy: Recollecting Black Innocence came to me in a dream in late October of 2020. After heightened visibility of racial injustice in the US, namely the slayings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, I began to question my role as an artist, storyteller, and soon-to-be mother. I figure that somehow, my brain crafted the term restorative joy from the legal term, restorative justice. I realized that my role as an artist and in the greater social justice landscape was to tell stories and create works that incite joy and promote healing, especially for Black people. The first works were completed and shown in Fall 2021 at a small Baltimore gallery. By 2022, the exhibition was the first to show in the reopening of Baltimore City Hall's Gallery-- this time with three additional works.
