"Feels Like Summer" was completed during my time as the annual resident for the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) Artist Residency in DC.
Exhibition Statement: Inspired by the work of authors like Nayyirah Waheed, Tricia Hersey, and EbonyJanice Moore, among others, and music by artists like Solange and Corinne Bailey Rae, "Feels Like Summer," expands on Yewande's social practice rooted in community care. In many ways, this collection is a response to the palpable collective grief and heaviness that has overtaken her and our lives. Through narrative portraiture and curated micro-installations, Yewande invites viewers to slow down, embrace the lightness of summer as a feeling rather than a season, and imagine a world where our bodies-- her body-- can finally embrace rest, ease, joy, and play.
